How to reply to an FBR notice
An FBR notice is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to act quickly. A clear, documented reply sent on time resolves most notices.
Read the notice first
Identify what it is about: a missing return, a call for information, an amendment of assessment or a recovery demand. The type decides what you need to send.
Note the reply date
Every notice states a date or number of days to respond. Write it down and plan to reply well before it. Do not ignore the notice.
Collect your records
- Bank statements for the period in the notice
- Invoices, receipts or salary slips
- Your last filed return and its acknowledgement
- Any earlier FBR correspondence
Reply in writing
Answer each point in the notice, attach the supporting records, submit through IRIS where required and keep proof of submission.
What goes wrong
- Replying late or not at all
- Sending incomplete records
- Answering without documents
If an order is passed against you, it can usually be appealed within a limited time, commonly 30 days, so check the date on the order straight away.
