Income tax return for freelancers in Pakistan
If you earn from Upwork, Fiverr or direct foreign clients, you should file an income tax return even when tax was already deducted. Filing records your foreign income correctly and keeps you on the Active Taxpayer List.
Who should file
Freelancers, IT exporters and anyone receiving foreign remittances for services. Whether you must file depends on your income and activity, so message me if you are unsure.
Documents to prepare
- CNIC copy
- Bank statements for the full year
- Proof of foreign remittances, such as bank advices or remittance certificates
- Earnings reports from Upwork, Fiverr or Payoneer
- PSEB registration, if you have one
- Your previous return, if you filed one
How export income is taxed
IT export income is generally taxed under a low final-tax rate on proceeds. The exact rate depends on your registration and conditions, and rules change with each Finance Act, so I confirm the current rate before I file.
Common mistakes
- Treating foreign remittances as ordinary salary income
- Leaving out months of bank statements
- Not declaring income received in wallets or foreign accounts
- Filing under the wrong income head
